How Nanotechnology Can Change Our Lives for the Better

In the last few years, there has been a significant increase in the amount of research devoted to nanotechnology. While humans have manipulated atoms and molecules for several decades now, we have just recently developed more advanced ways for doing so. While we now have far better tools to conduct nanotechnology research compared to just a few years ago, ongoing developments in this field would require additional funding and investment.

There are several reasons as to why funding nanotechnology research is so important. One should first understand that while we may manipulate matter to make microscopic objects, this isn’t done just for the sake of miniaturization itself. If we find ways to apply nanotechnology to make electronic components even smaller than they are today, this will have many practical applications. For example, we might one day create a storage medium that would be able to hold all the data currently found on the Internet on a chip the size of a fingernail. This would make computers and other electronic devices less expensive to build, more powerful and it would also make them consume just a fraction of the electricity they use today. At a time where there is growing concern over worldwide energy use, any development that could reduce our power consumption would be welcome.

Electronics isn’t the only field in which nanotechnology can be useful. Medicine could be significantly advanced if we were able to successfully manipulate molecules into creating medicines that would cure infectious diseases by attacking harmful viruses and bacteria, or kill cancer cells without affecting healthy cells found nearby. Thus, finding cures for serious diseases such as AIDS or cancer could be within our reach.
